We are now targets of attacks, kidnapping – Ondo monarchs cry out

Traditional rulers in Ondo State have decried the frequent attacks and kidnapping targeted at them recently in the state.

The traditional rulers who said the monarchs were now target of violence in the state, appealed to the state government to look into the matter with a view to addressing it.

The traditional rulers who spoke on Tuesday through the Chairman of the state council of Obas, the Olukare of Ikare Akoko, Oba Momoh Akadiri said the security of Obas should be paramount to the Government because of their position in the society.

The Council also condemned the attack on the traditional rulers of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidi-Omo.

The monarchs who met behind closed door at the Cocoa Conference hall in the governor’s office, described the attack as barbaric and uncalled for.

They said “The Ondo State Council of Obas at its statutory meeting held on Monday, 18th December, 2017 discussed the recent attack on the Olu of Igbokoda, His Royal Highness, Oba Afolabi Ayowole Odidiomo, on Wednesday, 13th December, 2017 by suspected hoodlums in his palace in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo state.

“The Ondo State Council of Obas hereby condemns in strong terms the attack on Oba Afolabi Ayowole Odidiomo and wishes to state without ambiguity that the attack on this revered Royal Father was unwarranted and an assault on the entire Traditional Rulers in the state and Yoruba Traditional Institution.

“While the Council sympathizes with Oba Afolabi Ayowole Odidiomo on this unfortunate incident and wishes him a speedy recovery, the Council calls for immediate arrest and prosecution of suspects of this dastardly act to serve as deterrent to other evil perpetrators.

“The Council also wishes to express its anxiety over the attacks and Kidnapping of Traditional Rulers in the State in the recent times; an indication that Obas have become targeted for violence.

“In view of this, the Council is appealing to the Government at all levels and heads of security agencies to look into the issue of security with a view to addressing it.

“The security of Obas should be paramount to the Government because of their position in the society, hence they should be provided with security “.

The chairman, Caretaker Committee, Ilaje local government, Hon.Fayowole Aworetan, who notified the state government through a letter to the commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Lola Fagbemi, confirmed that the hoodlums damaged the oba’s vehicle and inflicted serious injuries on the royal father.

The Council boss, however, disclosed that security Operatives were already on the trail of the criminals.
