The Abia State Government says it has so far built and renovated over 450 secondary and primary schools in the state within the last two years.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Theodore Orji, Ugochukwu Emezue, who disclosed this to Dailypost, said the schools were also well equipped.
Emezue who was reacting to a news report that Orji’s administration had not done much in the education sector, said it was disappointing to read such biased report.
According to him, besides the 450 primary and secondary schools, the government was presently building model secondary schools in all the three senatorial zones of the state.
Emezue further said that the government had also embarked on the renovation of selected secondary schools in the 17 local government councils of the state.
He noted that Governor Theodore Orji, being a well educated person, could not afford to neglect education for whatever reason.
The governor, Emezue further explained had his personal scholarship scheme through which he encouraged education among the youths.
Emezue accused the former governor of the state of sponsoring the publications as a campaign of lies against the administration of Governor Orji.
He challenged the former governor to point to Abia people what he did in the education sector throughout his eight years as governor of the state.
“There has been orchestrated campaign against Governor Orji from the former governor that nothing has been done in the state in the education sector. It is not true. The governor is doing well in that sector like in other sectors.
“Governor Orji is well educated from the University of Ibadan, so he loves and highly regards education. That is why he has Ochendo Bursary Award Scheme for students in the state. He has done so well in the education sector.
“For secondary and primary schools, the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, has built and renovated over 450 school and equipped them well. That shows the thinking of the Governor. That is why our students do well even in national competitions. ASUBEB has won best prizes in the South East.
“The governor is presently rebuilding some selected schools in the 17 local government areas. These things are done phase by phase. The governor is rebuilding decades of rotten things he met.
“We challenge the former governor to point out to Abians what he did in the education sector in his eight years administration.
“We expect the former governor to say congratulations to Governor Orji, let him be bold enough to say this”, the Chief Press Secretary said.
