“We are considering suggestions on N750 fixed DISCO charge” – NERC boss, Sam Amadi

Sam Amadi

The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, on has given hint of a downward review of the monthly N750 fee being charged by electricity distribution companies, also known as DISCOs.

He made the disclosure to this newspaper on Thursday.

DailyPost had asked him to react to calls, especially by medium and low-income earners, for scraping of the fixed charge.

“We are considering the suggestions and will make necessary direction soon”, Amadi said in a text message to our reporter.

Nigerians across the country have continued to query the rationale behind the charge.

They say it is out of place for consumers to pay the monthly fee despite paying the monthly bill.

A resident of Agege, Stanley Obi told DailyPost that the charge “makes mockery of President Jonathan’s so-called Transformation Agenda”.

He said “If you claim you’re transforming the power sector, how do you explain double charge on consumers.”

Also lamenting against the policy, an undergraduate, Seun Akinwale decried the attitude of educated Nigerians towards what he “described as anti-people policies.

“What is even disheartening is that some areas don’t even enjoy electricity”.

Citing an instance, the International Relations student said: “In my place at Old Yaba Road, between Saturday night and this (Thursday) morning, we’ve not had 20 hours of light.”

“I get home in the evening and ask if there was improvement but the response is usually negative.

“Now isn’t that N750 blood money? Of course it is and the federal government is there allowing these DISCOs milk its own people. Perhaps they are jointly milking us,” Akinwale asserted.
