Want-away striker Wayne Rooney tells United he wants to play upfront

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, has made it clear that he wants to play upfront for the club.

The player, who has handed in a transfer request and is linked with a move to Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, is set to sit down with new manager David Moyes, to discuss his future.

However, a key factor in the negotiations might be his desire to play through the middle – a position that Robin van Persie has made his own in just his first season.

“No. In the years to come, that might be somewhere I could play, but, right now, I’m definitely a centre-forward. I’m after more goals,” the 27-year-old said.

The England international has been deployed in a deep-lying midfield role and has become disenchanted at being substituted regularly.

“I’ve played up front on my own a few times for Manchester United and it’s a role I’m very comfortable with and have no problems playing,” he said in the July edition of FourFourTwo magazine.

“When you play as a target man, you have to stay up front and help the team out by holding the ball up and waiting for support. That all comes with experience.

“It’s a good role for me to play, and hopefully I can continue doing well there.”
