Wakil says power will be restored soon in Borno


Nigeria’s Minister of State for Power, Hon. Mohammed Wakil on Friday said that the two months power outage in Borno State will soon be over.

According to the minister, agreement has been reached to give maximum security to engineers, who are set to put the destroyed power lines in order.

DailyPost recalls that most parts of the troubled state have been in total blackout for two months now as a result of attacks by insurgents on Damboa, which destroyed the power lines.

The minister, in a press statement by his media aide, Alhaji Olawale Rasheed said the lines will soon be reconnected to the national power grid as the military and the federal ministry of power has reached agreement on security protection for engineers who will repair the vandalized power lines.

The minister who had set up a committee over a month ago chaired by his Technical Assistant, Engr. Umar Baba Mustapha to restore power to the troubled state, disclosed that the military and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reached final stage on the re-connection of Borno to the national grid.

He recalled that members of the Boko Haram sect had vandalized the 132 KVA power line from Damboa to Maiduguri, power supply to the state and efforts to reconnect the line has been hampered by ongoing insurgency and counter insurgency in the area.

The minister disclosed that the committee he set up has had several correspondences with the military on the need to ensure the security of engineers who will work on the vandalized power lines and assurances have been received.

The Chairman of the committee set up by the minister to restore power to Borno state, Engr. Mustapha said: “A team has visited the site of the vandalized power lines and both the TCN and the military will soon swing into action as the minister is on top of the situation”.

He added that: “The minister has written more than three letters to the military authorities and the response has been very impressive. Within the ministry, the Honourable Minister had issued written and verbal directives that the re-connection be done now that the security situation has improved in the affected areas. This directive is been urgently complied with”.
