Robin van Persie resumed from where he stopped last season, as his double ensured that Manchester United defeated Wigan Athletic, in the Community Shield game played today at Wembley.
The Dutchman got off the mark as early as the 9th minute, heading past Carson, after neat interplay with Patrice Evra down the left. The Red Devils surrendered their grasp on the game, as the half wore on, although the Latics failed to take their chances, when they created a few.
Van Persie made sure the Shield was United’s on the half hour, after he twisted into space and saw his effort deflect past James Perch.
It is David Moyes’ first piece of silverware, as he continues to settle in as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor. The next game he will take charge of, is the season’s opener against Swansea, as they hope to retain the Premier League crown.
