Van Gaal offered to resign after Southampton defeat

Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal, offered to resign after Saturday’s loss to Southampton.

According to a report in the UK Guardian, the Dutchman was ready to quit after the defeat at Old Trafford, that left United five points adrift of Champions League places.

However, he was convinced by executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, to discuss it with his family on a two-day trip to Holland. The pair are expected to talk about it again on Tuesday when Van Gaal returns to England.

On Boxing Day, the 64-year-old responded to questions about his future by saying: “I can also quit by myself.”

It is believed that Woodward is not keen to hire a new man before the season ends.
