Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, said Virgil van Dijk could be the man who will take Liverpool back to winning trophies’ if he chooses Anfield as his next destination.
Van Dijk is set to finally leave Southampton after handing in a transfer request, as one of the longest running sagas in the Premier League rumbles.
The Reds had to apologise to the Saints earlier this summer after botching their first bid, resulting in the South Coast club complaining to the FA.
Now they and Chelsea are in pole position to make another move for the centre back, which will likely cost over £50million.
Carragher, while admitting Chelsea have been the more successful team of late, thinks Liverpool could be the more interesting option, as Van Dijk could make himself a Cup hero.
“At this moment Chelsea are a better team than Liverpool no doubt about it, but the way Chelsea are set up, you would have him as the middle man in the back three, and David Luiz is so good there,” Speaking on Sky Sports, He said.
“With Liverpool, the thing would be if you could go there and be the man who took Liverpool back to winning trophies.” He added.
“Liverpool have won one trophy in 10, 12 years. Can he be the one who is part of something that starts with Jurgen Klopp.”
Liverpool were forced to issue a statement in July, apologising after intense speculation built around a move for Van Dijk, although no bid was made.
