The Chinedu Ogah Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Abakaliki, has cautioned that people should not mistake St. Valentine’s Day for a period to commit immorality and questionable activities.
He gave the warning on Saturday in Abakaliki when the organisation observed the day by hosting the less-privileged in Abakaliki.
Ogah said that the gesture was part of its annual activities to remember the less-privileged during the “season of love’’.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the organisation distributed cash and items such as wrappers and food items to more than 500 beneficiaries in Abakaliki.
He said that the organisation would continue to propagate the essence of Valentine Day to correct the erroneous notion surrounding it in the society.
He said that the organisation’s gesture was a way of supporting the good works of Gov. Martin Elechi of the state.
“This is not an occasion to engage in several forms of unsuitable behaviour and immorality but to show love and care to others, especially the less-privileged around us.
“It is not all about celebrating with one’s families or friends but with people who don’t have the same affluence or comfort like us.
“These people have innate talents which when properly harnessed, would uplift the society and as well encourage them to see their condition as a launch-pad to greatness,’’ he said.
Mrs Rose Onele, one of the beneficiaries, thanked the organisation for the gesture and called on affluent members of the society to emulate the organisation’s initiative.
