Valentine: Mayor raids shops selling condoms to unmarried lovers

The mayor of Makassar, an Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island, on Tuesday raided shops selling condoms on the eve of Valentine’s Day.

A local media, Antara reports that the mayor, Mohammad Pomanto, complained during the brief inspections of mini marts that stores were selling condoms “like they were candy.’’

He added, “Valentine’s Day is a day of love but it doesn’t mean people can do anything in the name of love.

“It’s not about Valentine’s Day but it’s about moral degradation.”

According to Pomanto, the stores that sold it freely to unmarried teenagers would have their permits revoked.

In 2016 the mayor issued a circular demanding that stores in the largest city in eastern Indonesia sell condoms to only married people.

Indonesia, which is the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, share conservative views about sex.
