Valencia vs Juventus: Why Ronaldo won’t win appeal against red card – Craig Burley

Football pundit, Craig Burley has explained why Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo will not win an appeal over the red card he got during his side’s 2-0 win against Velencia at the Champions League.

Ronaldo was shown a straight red card by referee, Felix Brych, during the first half of the encounter following a coming-together with Jeison Murillo in an off-the-ball incident.

According to Burley, the Portuguese captain will not win an appeal over the red card because of the nature of the incident.

Burley, however, believes that Ronaldo was not supposed to be given red card.

“There didn’t seem enough in it for me at all,” Burley said told ESPN.

“But I think what will happen here is I don’t think UEFA will rescind it.

“I don’t believe it was a red card at all, but I don’t believe they will (rescind it) because they will point to ‘there was contact’. A pull of the hair or whatever and they’ll say ‘you’re not allowed to do that’. I don’t think they’ll rescind it.”

When Burley was asked if he thought it was even a yellow card, he said: “I don’t think so.

“I don’t think they will budge on it because they will back their referees.

“I mean what we’ve got here is Europe’s elite competition and the World Cup was a great success with VAR, big pressure, we’ve got most of the leagues in Europe with VAR and here we’ve got the elite of the elite and we’re relying on a couple of extra officials with their sticks behind the goal.

“In the Liverpool game they got some decisions correct but we’re talking about one of the greatest players in the world here in a competition that they’re trying to win and why he’s at the club and I think that could have potential cleared it up.”

Ronaldo will now miss Juventus’ next game against Swiss side, Young Boys, after receiving his first ever Champions League red card on Wednesday.
