US commends Jonathan, urges him to continue in leadership role


The government of United States of America has praised President Goodluck Jonathan for his role in the peaceful conduct of the March 28 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Tuesday through the US Embassy in Nigeria, the White House said the American Vice President, Joe Biden, made a phone call to Nigeria’s president.

The statement reads in part: “Vice President Joe Biden spoke today with Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, to commend him for his leadership in ensuring Nigeria’s recent elections were peaceful and orderly.

“The Vice President noted that President Jonathan’s actions to accept the results and congratulate President-elect Buhari, as well as his steps to date to ensure a successful transition, have strengthened Nigeria’s democracy and set a strong example for Africa and the world.”

According to the statement, the US’ vice president equally encouraged President Jonathan to stay engaged and play leadership roles in global issues after the expiration of his presidency.
