Dr Celsus Undie, a urologist with a private hospital in Abuja, on Thursday advised men with inflamed testicles to seek proper medical attention to prevent further complications.
Undie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the inflammation, medically known as orchitis, could be caused by bacterial infection in the urinary tract.
He warned that it was difficult to treat.
“Orchitis means inflammation of the testes; usually it is caused by bacteria infection in the urinary tract.
“In this case infection has trapped along the tube that conducts sperm cell and the testes to the ejaculating duct which opens into the urethra.
“Symptoms are painful testes, sometimes swollen and sometimes even the general covering of the testes, the scrotum is swollen.
“Occasionally, patients also have urinary symptoms, like painful urination or they may notice a change in the colour of their urine.
“In adults, you may find that the individual has been sexually exposed within a couple of days before the symptoms start.
“There is a barrier that separates the content of the general circulation from the content of the testes; so even when you give adequate treatment, the medicine does not penetrate the testes very well.“
He said that the inflammation could be prevented by the use of condoms as well as abstinence from casual sex.
“The cases that are due to bacterial infection can be very easily be prevented by paying attention to sexual hygiene, abstinence, use of barrier, contraception or condoms to prevent contact between the urethra and the female genital tract.
“So when people pay attention to this they can very well prevent sexually transmitted infection that could cause orchitis and this is usually the case in many patients.“ (NAN)
