Pandemonium broke out in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State on Sunday after a police officer allegedly shot dead a young man identified as Mohammed Ismail in the area.
The deceased, a father of one, met his untimely death while attending a rally to flag off the formal declaration of one of the chairmanship aspirants in the local government, Abdulrahaman Dansabe, at the football pitch in Ajaokuta.
It was reliably gathered that the ugly incident occurred around 2 pm while the aspirant, who is contesting on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, was unfolding his plans to move the local government forward. While the occasion was going on, a policeman (name withheld), suddenly opened fire on the crowd, with one of the bullets hitting the deceased’s left rib and bursting out through the other side.
The development caused confusion in the area as those at the venue of the rally ran for their safety, scampering in different directions to avoid being hit by the any bullet.
What led to the action of the policeman could not be explained at the time of this report.
However, some people at the occasion said they were not surprise with the behaviour of the policeman, alleging that the law enforcement agent was under the influence of alcohol, as he was said to be ” very high” at the time he committed the act.
Efforts to save the life of the deceased, who was described as quite and easy going man by some members of the community, proved fruitless, as he was said to have given up the ghost shortly after he was rushed to a nearby hospital.
The lifeless body of the deceased, who graduated from the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, was later committed to mother earth around 7.30 pm on Sunday.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya to confirm the incident were not successful as he failed to pick or return calls put across to his two mobile lines.
