Members of the Agbarho Community Vigilante in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday allegedly shot dead a nine-year-old boy, Oghenekobiruo Peter, with another seriously injured.
DAILY POST gathered that the deceased was in his mother’s shop when the ugly incident occurred.
At the time of filing this report, the victim was lying lifeless in their house waiting to be buried.
There were also blood stains in front of the victim’s mother’s shop.
An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said the Vigilante in their usual tradition to announce their presence in the area shot sporadically in the air.
The eyewitness said it was in the process, the boy was hit by bullets and he died instantly.
DAILY POST learnt that members of the Vigilante who were involved in the incident have all been arrested by the Agbarho Police Divisional Headquarters.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR led by Comrade Prince Kehinde-Taiga has expressed displeasure at the unprofessional conducts of the Vigilante, which led to the death of the nine-year-old boy.
Taiga, who was represented by CDHR Assistant Secretary, Comrade Israel Joe spoke when they paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s family.
Joe said, “The incident has left me with some pains as the tragedy is too much for the mother.”
Joe also urged the Divisional Police Officer of the Agbarho Divisional Headquarters simply identified as CSP Nosa to transfer the suspects to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Asaba for prosecution in line with the deceased’s family decision to serve as a deterrent to others who feel they can fire arms at will.
According to Joe, “The position of the CDHR Chairman who have mandated me is, Justice for the victim and we hope it be carried out immediately.”
Contacted, the Delta State Commissioner of Police,CP Muhammad Mustafa confirmed the report.
CP Mustafa said, “Yes, the DPO reported the matter to me. I didn’t know he was nine years old.”
