UNN’s VC shocked over number of students engaging in odd jobs to pay school fees

The alarming increase in the number of students who are constantly engaged in menial jobs at construction sites in Nsukka in order to cope in school has left the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Professor Barth Okolo dumbfounded.

Expressing his shock through the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Isaac Asuzu while receiving Chief Samuel Maduka Onyishi, initiator of scholarship award at the Institute of African Studies of the university in his office, Prof. Okolo regretted the hardship of most of the students who in their effort to survive in school have decided to patronize building sites.

While expressing his appreciation to the Chairman/CEO of Peace Mass Transit for granting scholarships to 100 students of the university, Okolo emphasized that education is the best gift anyone could be given in life.

He urged other captains of industries and philanthropist to key into education to build a virile society.

He however advised the scholarship beneficiaries to judiciously make use of it to become reputable individuals in the nearest future.

Responding, Chief Samuel Onyishi said the 2012 edition is the fourth since its inception in 2009, noting that he has spent over N150 million on the scheme since inception.

Onyishi revealed that almost 2000 students apply for the scholarship but lamented that the scheme can only accommodate 100 presently, assuring that the figure would be increased to 300 in the nearest future.
