The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Michael Adikwu, has advised students of tertiary institutions in the country to take advantage of available opportunities to acquire entrepreneurial skills.
This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Nathan Oguwike, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of Students in Nigeria Re-Awakening Initiative (STINRI), on Monday in Abuja.
The statement quoted Adikwu as giving the advice at a students’ forum, organised by the Entrepreneurs Focus Ventures (EFV) of the university in Abuja.
According to him, the purpose of the programme is to encourage entrepreneurship among young outgoing students who will soon find themselves in the labour market.
The vice-chancellor, who said that the future of Nigeria as a country lies with the enterprising youths, called on them to embrace the challenge to being self employed through creativity.
He commended the organisers of the programme for their efforts to encourage entrepreneurship among young graduates.
One of the highlights at the occasion, according to the statement is honouring of the VC by STINRI, for his excellence performance in his first year in office.
Oguwike recalled that the VC, came to the institution at a time it was enmeshed in internal crisis that completely paralyzed academic activities.
He commended the VC for using his experience to restore normalcy to the university.
“Before his assumption of office, industrial actions and agitations were regular features in the university.
“The academic staff were on strike and the non-academic staff were equally on strike.
“To worsen the situation, there were frequent agitations by the students of the university,” he said.
Oguwike added that the VC had brought the crisis bedeviling the university to an end, adding that relative peace had pervaded the university.
According to him, the incessant crisis in the institution is now a thing of the past and the university has moved up remarkably in the ranking of universities in the country.
