Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, has said that he hopes for the “the best refereeing performance” on Tuesday evening, when his side host Real Madrid.
On the two occasions when the Red Devils played in a game, with Cuneyt Cakir in the middle, they failed to win – they drew with Benfica in last season’s Champions League game and lost to Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League.
Interestingly, Jose Mourinho also criticised the Turkish official, after he ruled out a goal in their 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund last December.
Ferguson says he expects Cakir to be on top of his game at Old Trafford.
“You hope in a game of this nature that you are going to get the best refereeing performance, on the same level as the players on the pitch,” he said.
“Mistakes will be made by players and the referee but you hope it will be a top performance. You hope to get nothing less than the best. An occasion like this deserves that.”
