The United States Agency for International Development, USAID, has donated $92.73m as development assistance to support Nigeria’s effort in the reduction of extreme poverty.

A statement issued yesterday by the US embassy in Abuja explained that the fund was part of the five-year $2.3bn agreement signed with Nigeria in 2015, bringing the total of development assistance provided by USAID to $474.74m.

It quoted the USAID Mission Director, Michael Harvey, as saying that the United States was pleased to contribute additional funding in support of the agreement.

“This funding will continue to help Nigeria reduce extreme poverty in a more stable, democratic society. Activities will stimulate inclusive economic growth, promote a healthier, more-educated population, and strengthen good governance,” he said.

Harvey expressed confidence that the funding, under the watch of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, would have a significant impact on the wellbeing of Nigerians.

USAID had earlier promised it would spend about N15 billion (75 million dollars) for the prevention of malaria in selected states of the country this year.
