Students of the University of Jos on Friday rejected the N45, 000 recent school fees hike being implemented by the management of the institution and have threatened to boycott lectures if nothing is done.

The students made their position known while briefing journalists in Jos, through the President, Students Union Government of the University, Comrade Sidney Daman.

Daman said, “It is pertinent to note that the SUG woke up to the reality of a purported hike in school charges as against the N27, 400, with the justification that the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Universities Commission (NUC), which is a public institution saddled with the responsibility to maintain and regulate Federal public tertiary institutions in the country, issued out a memo that all federal institutions should unify school charges to a benchmark of N45, 000 only as alleged by the University management.

“To our parents and guardians, we call on you all to wake up and stand with your children/wards on this issue.

The SUG President threatened that if the management does not look into their issue, by reducing the fees, they may be forced to mobilize other students to boycott lectures.

He said, as a responsible union, they are open to dialogue, but, however, lamented that the union had written several letters to the management on the hike in fees, but it has kept deaf ears on the matter.

It would be recalled that management of the university of Jos, had recently in a statement signed by Sarah Alfa, Communication Officer, Advancement Office, said that stakeholders of the university had backed management’s decision to implement the Federal Government’s directive that fees for University undergraduates be increased to ₦45, 000.
