UNICEF says Baga killings unacceptable

The killing of children, women and the elderly in Baga town of Borno State has been condemned by the United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Monday.

Mr Anthony Lake, the Executive Director of UNICEF disclosed this on Monday in a statement in Abuja that the killings would have an adverse effect on the nation’s image.

He condemned the continuous killings and abduction of children within the North Eastern region of the country, urging those perpetrating the act to have respect for human lives.

The Executive Director also said, “Words alone can neither express our outrage nor ease the agony of all those suffering from the constant violence in northern Nigeria, ‘and he recounted the when over 200 schoolgirls were abducted in April 2015 from their hostel, yet to be set free.

“And lest we forget, more than 200 girls were stolen from their families, still lost,’’.

Lake urged the Federal Government to try to reconcile aggrieved parties in the country, particularly in the North East, noting that the persistent killing of innocent people was seriously having an adverse effect on the nation.

“The images of recent days and all they imply for the future of Nigeria should galvanise effective action, for this cannot go on.’’

It will be recalled that the Baga killings occurred on Jan. 3 when Boko Haram insurgents attacked the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force, comprising soldiers from Nigeria, Chad..

“Over 2,000’’ people were killed or “unaccounted for,’ this is according to local officials and people who fled the area.
