The University of Calabar (Unical) has postponed the 31st convocation ceremony of the institution.

The Management of the University announced the postponement on Tuesday. The ceremony was scheduled to hold on Saturday, March 10, 2018.

DAILY POST gathered that the postponement may not be unconnected with the alleged crisis in the institution’s hierarchy.

It was gathered that Barrister Joseph Odok, a lecturer in the department of Philosophy was suspended by the University of Calabar (Unical) over his post on social media.

He made some allegations against the leadership of the University including the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu.

Again, the Associate Professor, University of Calabar (Unical) Prof. Mensah Eyo and five students in the institution were to face prosecution over certificate forgery.

The matter which the Director of Public Prosecution, Greg I. Okem denied and claimed he was not aware of.

He told DAILY POST in his office in Calabar that letter directing Professor Mensah Eyo to appear before him was forged.

The Professor is a Lecturer in the department of Linguistics in the University and was to be tried along five other students of the institution in court over an alleged certificate forgery allegation.

“Everything about that letter was forged. If you look at this document, several things are wrong; you say this people are to stand trial, which court, no charges level against them either in the Magistrate court or in High court.

“Who to give evidence, where is the evidence to be led, the people to give evidence at where, this Dr Mensa and the rest of them who are standing trial, is it in the Ministry of Justice, this is not High Court,” he stated.

In a statement issued by the University Registrar, Moses Abang, the convocation was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

The letter expressed the management’s regret, adding that a new date will be announced later.

“The University of Calabar hereby announces the immediate postponement of its 31st convocation ceremony earlier scheduled for Saturday March 10, 2018.

”The postponement is due to unforeseen circumstances. Management sincerely regrets any inconveniences caused our visitors, graduands, awardees, parents and the general public. A new date will be announced later,” the Registrar stated.
