The University of Abuja, UniAbuja, management has explained that the redistribution exercise of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, was what caused the university’s cancellation of the post Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination, UMTE, screening for students seeking admission into its 2015/ 2016 academic year.
The management through the UniAbuja spokesman, Waziri Garba told Daily Trust that there was no need for post UTME since the redistribution exercise carried out by JAMB has left the school with a number of candidates it can handle.
According to him, “initially we had about 16,000 candidates applying then after JAMB did their redistribution exercise we came down to about 6,000 and we need about 4,000 students only. So why do we conduct post UMTE, it will cost us more to conduct it for 6,000 people than 16,000 people”.
Garba, who explained that the school had resolved to do the admission on merit basis at the departmental level, said the exercise was currently ongoing at the departmental level and will later proceed to central admission unit of the varsity which will compile everything before finally being sent to JAMB.
