The National Directorate of Employment, NDE, has stated that the rate of unemployment in the country is high because youths are scared of squaring up to the challenges of self-employment.
The Director-General of the NDE, Mr. Kunle Obayan, according to a statement issued on Tuesday, stated this in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during the inauguration of the training of over 360 youths in the state.
Obayan, who was represented at the occasion by the Ogun State Co-ordinator of the NDE, Femi Oyenekan, urged youths in the country to apply for the skill acquisition training of the agency to enable them become self-reliant.
According to the statement, no fewer than 9,360 youths, who will be trained nationwide, will also be empowered with tools at the end of the five-month training.
Part of the statement reads, “Obayan said the training exercise is aimed at exposing the participants to the benefits of self employment through skills acquisition training and capacity enhancement in various vocational trades.
“He added that unemployment had become critical because youths are tacitly avoiding the realities of making a living through self-employment. He maintained that self employment through training of youths and the unemployed is the cardinal focus of the NDE.
“Obayan said the mandate of the NDE is to fight unemployment and create jobs. He appealed to unemployed youths roaming the streets to avail themselves of job opportunities of the NDE and become self-employed.”
The statement added that the candidates would be trained in GSM repair, computer operation and maintenance, photography, video coverage, interior decoration, among others.
