UN sends high-powered delegation to back Buhari’s fight against corruption


The United Nations, UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon‎ has sent a high-powered delegation to have a meeting with the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami SAN, as a means of giving effect to its pledge to assist Nigeria in the country’s bid to conquer the twin menace of corruption and terrorism.

A statement by the Director of Information at the Ministry of Justice‎, Mr. Nwodo Charles revealed that the delegation met with the AGF over the weekend at his office in Abuja and was led by ‎UN Special envoy on ECOWAS, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas‎.

Noting that the UN was in full support of the ‎current drive by President Muhammadu Buhari to recover funds looted from the treasury, Chambers said the organization will cooperate with Nigeria to strengthen the administration of Justice, rule of law and respect for human rights in the country. He however pointed out that there was the need for all African countries in the Lake Chad Basin Commission, LCBC, to form a common front against the menace of terrorism, especially with regards to the spreading activities of the Boko Haram ‎sect.

‎The statement reads, “While congratulating the Minister on behalf of United Nations on his appointment, he noted the landmark achievements resulting from the free, fair and credible elections that were recently conducted in Nigeria, this he said has brought progress to Africa’s nascent democracy.

“Dr. Chambas was optimistic that with the completion of the remaining 100km border posts, Boko Haram terrorists will be defeated”.

In his response, the Minister of Justice said the administration of President Buhari would not relent on its effort to bring to book, anyone found to have economically sabotaged the nation.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of success so far recorded by the Nigeria/Cameroon joint Border Commission, in terms of resolving cross border disputes between the two countries.

Malami assured that the present administration would be committed towards ensuring that unnecessary border disputes within the Lake Chad Basin areas are resolved amicably.

He told the UN that Nigeria is currently working with other countries on reforms and protocols that will ultimately, bring about everlasting peace in the region.

Malami said in the spirit of mutual cooperation and collaboration, the federal government is willing to further deepen the cordial relationship that had existed among the countries.
