Chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Anambra State, Chief Chris Eluemuno, has lashed out at the Department of State Service (DSS), over last week’s arrest of former national chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and candidate of the party in the forthcoming Anambra Central Senatorial election, Chief Victor Umeh.
The APGA chieftain was apprehended at his Aguluzuigbo residence, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, by the security operatives and released the following day, over allegation of having hands in the operations of MASOB and IPOB.
While vehemently condemning Umeh’s arrest at his Nkweke Ezunaka residence, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Chief Eluemuno averred that it was wrong to have arrested an “innocent man” without thorough investigation into the matter, stressing that in civilised countries, such sensitive matters would have been secretly investigated by the secret service, before engaging in the arrest of suspects.
He said, “No innocent person should be made to suffer over a seemingly frivolous petition written by another person because of politics. I advise the security operatives to carry out proper investigation before arresting people as it is done in civilised countries. Let civility take its cause in their arrests and investigation.”
Chief Eluemuno further cautioned Igbo political elites to desist from carrying their selfish ambitions too far by witch-hunting one another.
“I condemn the idea of writing false and frivolous petitions against one another because of one’s political ambitions. It’s been carried too far. I know that at the end of the day, the truth will emerge without Ohanaeze’s intervention.”
He warned that national interest and that of Igbo nation should be given priority before personal interest.
He added, “That Victor Umeh is supporting IPOB or MASSOB or even sympathetic to their cause is not an offence. It constitutes an offence when he is found to be financially subjected to their cause or aiding their activities. Those sponsoring Boko Haram are known.
“Some of them have been implicated in intelligence reports, but are still parading the streets of the North and Abuja. Have they been arrested or punished?”
