Uganda breaks 40-year jinx, qualifies for AFCON

Uganda found their way to the 2017 African Cup of Nations to be hosted in Gabon during the weekend after a lone goal win over the Comoros Island, ending an almost forty years absence from Africa’s most prestigious competition.

With the only goal coming from Farouk Miya in Kampala on Sunday, Uganda claimed the second spot behind Burkina Faso in their group, taken one of the two places reserved for the runners-up in 13 qualifying groups.

Uganda last featured at the Nations Cup in 1978 when they lost to hosts Ghana in the final.

Meanwhile Burkina Faso topped group D after a final-minute goal from Banou Diawara ensured a 2-1 home victory over Botswana who were reduced to 10 men.

DR Congo, Togo and Tunisia completed the three berths decided on the last day of the qualifiers.

The last weekend’s qualifiers meant nothing for ten teams that had already booked their places after the penultimate round of matches in June.
