UEFA insists Ibrahimovic will serve Champions League suspension

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss the first leg of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League quarter-final, after UEFA confirmed the French club cannot appeal his red card against Chelsea.

Ibrahimovic was dismissed for a foul on Oscar in the 31st minute during their 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

PSG went on to produce a fantastic performance with 10 men, to qualify for the last eight, thanks to away goals rule.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho called for the red card to be rescinded, but it appears the Swede will sit out the next Champions League game.

“According to the regulations, a red card means automatically at least a one-match ban,” a UEFA spokesman told Perform.

“The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will meet on 19 March to deal with this case, in other words they will take a decision on whether the player is suspended only for one match or more.”

UEFA added that, under their regulations, a team has no right of appeal aside from in a case where a referee has made an obvious error such as mistaking the identity of the offending player.
