Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, yesterday, berated those he said were promoting ethnic and religious crisis in the country, adding that if the ugly trend is not urgently and properly nipped in the bud, the country’s quest for unity will be a mirage.
The governor said the challenges of incessant disagreement between ethnic and religious groups had become alarming, appealing to those who meant well for the country, to start looking for measures to ensure the progress of the country.
Uduaghan stated this while speaking at a summit, tagged: ‘National Integration Roundtable’ in Abuja, insisting that citizens must begin to canvass for peaceful co-existence and national integration. This, he said must include the promotion of civil patriotism over ethno-religious nationalism, “as the only panacea for stability in the polity.
“I must point out that the challenges of incessant disagreement between one ethnic or religious group and others have become quite disturbing.
“This summit is, therefore, a veritable occasion through which we could create awareness of the potential dangers inherent in the disruption of the peace and progress of our dear country and the importance of national integration to peaceful coexistence, national cohesion, political, economic and social stability,” he said.
Represented by the Commissioner, Delta State Abuja Liason Office, Joel Bisina, Uduaghan urged youths to dedicate their talents, energies and time to meaningful activities and ventures that will positively impact on the socio-economic and political transformation of the society.
He said: “This can be achieved if they are prepared physically, spiritually and mentally. Since society is dynamic, the youths must be prepared to lead the process and adjust their ways to meet the challenges as they come.”
