Wayne Rooney scored his 200th goal for Manchester United, as David Moyes won his first Champions League game in charge of the club.
The England striker opened scoring in the first half, with a neat volley from Patrice Evra’s cross. Simon Rolfes made it 1-1 nine minutes after the break with a sublime strike of his own. Van Persie’s acrobatic effort put United in front again, before Rooney got his second. Antonio Valencia slammed in the fourth goal for the hosts and there was still time for Omer Toprak to get a second for Leverkusen.
Cristiano Ronaldo helped himself to a hat-trick in Istanbul, as Real Madrid demolished Galatasaray 6-1. Juventus came froma goal down to draw 1-1 with FC Copenhagen at Parken, while Paris Saint-Germain trashed Olympiakos 4-1 on their home turf. Benfica beat Anderlecht 2-0.
Real Sociedad, who impressively dumped out Lyon from the competition, were beaten 2-0 at home by Shakhtar Donetsk. Bayern Munich began the defence of their title with a comfortable 3-0 victory over CSKA Moscow at the Allianz Arena and Manchester City won their first European game since 2010, with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen.
