A two-week-old baby girl was dropped in front of a woman’s house at Ikpai Ikot-Omin in Calabar Municipal Council, Cross River State.
An eyewitness who gave her name as Geraldine Okon said, “The baby was dropped at the woman’s door at her house at Ikpai Ikot Omin in Eight Miles in Calabar Municipal Council in Cross River State.
“The woman took the baby to the Police Station at Miles and narrated the incident to them (Police) and they (Police) took the baby to the welfare department of the Governor’s office for safekeeping and feeding,” She stated.
She said “If the woman was to take custody of the baby, she would have to pass through the welfare department in Governor’s office for necessary documentation.
When DAILY POST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Ms Irene Ugbo on phone on Saturday, she confirmed the story.
She said, “The baby was a two-week-old baby girl. The woman reported to the station that she heard the cry of the baby in the early hour of the day which attracted her to wake up.
“When she woke up and came out, she saw the baby wrapped with cloths and kept in front of her door and she took the baby to us. We have taken the baby to the welfare department for upkeep,” she stated.
The PPRO explained why the woman cannot take custody of the baby, “There are procedures to adopt a baby,” explaining that if she is interested, she has to pass through the welfare department of the Governor’s office.
She further explained that the biological mother of the baby that allegedly dropped the baby had not shown up.
