At least two persons have been reportedly killed and a community leader kidnapped by gunmen in Rundele, Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The incident happened during the weekend when a cultural hunting expedition ended in a clash between two rival cults in Mgbuelia village of Rundele, leading to the killing of two persons.
A community source, Alex Ibani, told Vanguard that following the cult clash, armed men invaded the residence of one Chief Goodluck Umentor some minutes past 10 p.m. Monday night and whisked him away.
He said: “My brother, the problem started Sunday, when the village celebrated its cultural festival of hunting expedition. Two cult gangs clashed in the process which led to the murder of two persons.
“This (Monday) evening, we just heard gunshots only to discover that a recognized chief has been kidnapped.”
The chief’s whereabouts remained unknown, even as contact is said to have been established between the family and the abductors.
Spokesman for Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incidents.
He, however, assured residents of the command’s determination to rescue the abducted victim and prosecute culprits of the murder.
