Two feared dead, others injured as Delta communities‎ clash

No fewer than two persons have been feared dead, with several others sustaining serious gun shot and machete wounds as fresh crisis rocked Uwherhun and Unenurhie Communities in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State.

Over seven persons are unaccounted for at the time of this report, DAILY POST learnt.

It was gathered that the crisis followed the mysterious death and subsequent burial of an indigene of Uwherhnu Community at Unenurhie Community.

The incident prompted indigenes of Uwherhun to allegedly attack the Unenurhie people to avenge the death of their kinsman.

The Uwherhun youths allegedly invaded Unenurhie with sporadic gun shots as they unleashed terror on the people of Unenurhie Community.

President General of Unenurhie Community, Chief Felix Edjereki confirmed the report saying,“as I speak with you, at least seven persons are unaccounted for, four of those held hostage have been released, while 11 are still held back, while one of those injured has been rushed to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, Oghara.”

President General of Uwherhun Community, Chief Ogarivi Utso, also confirmed the report saying, “Though I tried to calm the youths, who were already agitated for a showdown, they rebuffed my efforts and even threatened to unleash mayhem on me.

“Unfortunately, one of our boys was killed during the incident, while two others are currently receiving medical attention at DELSUTH, Oghara.”

It took the intervention of the policemen from the Ughelli Area Command and soldiers drafted from the 222 Battalion of Operation Delta Safe, to stop the situation from snowballing into a full scale war.

Contacted, the Delta State Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said he has not been briefed on the incident just as he promised to get more details on the clash.
