Chairman of Rivers State chapter Trade Union Congress, TUC, Mr. Chika Onuegbu, on Wednesday urged Nigerians to shun violence before, during and after elections.
Onuegbu made the call in a statement made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt.
He recalled that the mismanagement of 1966 elections led to the civil war, which Nigeria was suffering as a nation today.
He urged Rivers people to pray for peace in the country and also shun all conducts that could lead to violence in the 2015 general elections.
Onuegbu noted that on March 23, at the Rivers debate, the three governorship aspirants embraced themselves as friends and colleagues.
“We appeal to their supporters to do the same and avoid all forms of violence; we want peaceful election devoid of any act of violence.
“Violence destroys democracy and creates conditions that make post election reconciliation and governance difficult.
“We appeal to all candidates to show spirit of sportsmanship as election is not do-or-die-affair,” Onuegbu said.
He called on INEC to ensure a level playing field to all participants and guarantee free, fair and credible elections.
Onuegbu also urged the security agencies to ensure that there would be adequate security for voters to carry out their civic right.
