TUC cautions Rivers Police Chief

The Rivers State chapter of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, has said the Rivers State Police commissioner, Joseph Mbu is taking organised Labour in the state for granted.

While expressing its readiness to work with the Police Command Chairman of the TUC, Chika Onuegbu in an interview with DailyPost said the police betrayed understanding they thought they had.

Onuegbu said the union decided to parley with the police because of the importance of lives and property in the state.

“We had a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, CP Mbu. I led the delegation to the meeting. We spent about 3 to 4 hours discussing and after that we told him organised Labour in Rivers State is ready to work with him.

“We told him our working with him will be based on understanding that the rule of law will prevail.

“We made him to understand that just as we worked with his predecessors, we will also support him to succeed. We need to support him because security of lives and property is paramount”, he disclosed.

He also added that in their co-operation with the police, TUC would continue to protect the welfare of the people.

The TUC boss indicated that organised Labour in Rivers State were capable of derailing the economy of the country.

“He also described his challenge to us. Then based on that, we gave him that assurance.

“But there is a condition. The condition is that in Rivers State, we have a very vibrant Trade Union movement. There are certain things that can take place in other states that the trade union movement will not allow to take place in Rivers State, especially when it comes to the lives and the welfare of our members and ordinary people of Rivers State”, he said.

TUC said the union was disappointed when they heard that the Rivers State police command used tear-gas to disperse 13 thousand teachers that were newly recruited by the Rivers State government.
