The Chief Security Adviser to the United States President, Donald Trump, Michael Flynn has resigned amid allegations he discussed US sanctions strategy with Russia’s ambassador, Sergey Kislyak before taking office.

The White House yesterday confirmed that Trump had accepted Flynn’s resignation.

Flynn, who once headed the country’s military intelligence, insisted he was honoured to have served the American people in such a “distinguished” manner.

But he admitted that he “inadvertently briefed” the now Vice President, Mike Pence with “incomplete information” about his calls with Kislyak.

The Vice President earlier defended Flynn, claiming the security chief did not discuss sanctions, thereby putting his own credibility to question.

Flynn’s letter, which he released to the White House, reads, “Regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology.”

According to The White House, President Trump has named retired Lieutenant General Joseph Kellogg, as the interim national security adviser.

Kellogg is a decorated Vietnam War veteran who was serving as a director on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
