Tribunal probing death of Lekki Investment’s boss submits report

Following the killing of Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited boss, Alhaji Tanjudeen Disu, a tribunal of inquiry that was set up by the Lagos State government to investigate circumstances which led to the crisis in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State that resulted in his death yesterday submitted its findings.

It would be recalled that Disu died following a riot which broke out between mobile policemen and members of the Okunraye community in Lekki last year. Lagos state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, thereafter inaugurated a tribunal to investigate the cause of the crisis. On Wednesday, while submitting the report, chairman of the tribunal, Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olateru (retd.), stated that the panel visited all the areas the crisis occurred and documented all the findings in the report.

He also noted that the tribunal gathered 22 memoranda and reviewed 33 witness statements and that about 24 recommendations were put in place to prevent future recurrence

In his words, “We took time out to visit the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ). We visited the Dangote Industries, Lekki Worldwide Investment Limited, the villages and communities in the area, including Okunraye where the trouble began.

“Our view is that Lekki Free Trade Zone has vast potential to transform the economic landscape of Lagos State in terms of generating massive employment, creation of wealth, generating revenue, among others. Our findings reveal that the transformation would be on a scale that is hitherto unparalleled in Africa.”

Governor Ambode, while receiving the report, promised to pay prompt attention to it, stating that the LFTZ was an important project to the state’s economy because of its role in the job creation drive of his government.

The Governor said he will do everything to see to the successful implementation of the report.

“Let me assure members of the public and investors alike that this government will always uphold the rule of law and continue to provide a conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive,” he added.

He thanked the committee for delivering their job within the stipulated time-frame.

Meanwhile, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, also praised the tribunal for completing their findings within a period of 45 days.

Kazeem noted that the civil disturbances which led to Disu’s killing in the Okunraye community had stalled the development of the LFTZ, and that the tribunal was set up as part of efforts to ensure protection of lives and property, prevent further crisis and enhance the economic well-being of the state.
