Dr Celsus Undie, a urologist at the National Hospital Abuja, on Tuesday advised men with low sperm count to go for treatment to help enhance their fertility.
Undie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the woman should not be made to feel guilty always where the issue of infertility in the family existed, advising couples with fertility problems to seek medical help.
“People go from hospital to hospital for in-vitro fertilisation and it costs a lot of money; success rate is just about 30 per cent and sometimes the problem is not even from the woman.
“Why should the woman carry the burden for a problem that is entirely that of the male; why shouldn’t the man also present himself in the hospital to be tested.
“When the sperm count is low, why should we leave the treatment of the sperm count and focus completely on the woman who goes to the hospital for repeated injections and she has to have an embryo inserted into her.
“Rather than have the man treated and correct the problem which is entirely that of the male. In-vitro fertilisation does not treat infertility it only by-passes the problem.
“Most couples will prefer to conceive their baby in the comfort of their bedrooms and they can choose to have as many babies as they want once the man is treated.
“If the man is treated or has had surgery, the chance of pregnancy is higher than a chance doing IVF.“
Undie said that it was only after the man with a low sperm count had gone for appropriate surgery and the sperm count returned to normal that the couple could have babies.
“If the sperm count returns to normal following appropriate surgery in a man, the couple could have as many children as they want without having to see a doctor each time.
“Men who have issues with their erection or reproduction should see a urologist, while their wives see a gynaecologist after a detailed history of the problem and physical examination.
“In most cases, the urologist can say why the sperm count is low and can offer advice.“
According to Undie, apart from living a healthy lifestyle, there is nothing a man who already has low sperm count can do to boost his sperm production until he sees a urologist. (NAN)
