Transfer news: Taiwo Awoniyi leaves Liverpool

Taiwo Awoniyi has left Liverpool to join KAA Gent on a season-long loan deal.

The Nigerian striker, who signed a new long-term Liverpool contract last week, will spend the 2018/2019 campaign with the Belgian club.

Awoniyi originally moved to Anfield from the Imperial Soccer Academy in 2015.

The 20-year-old has had loan spells with FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen and Royal Excel Mouscron in the last three seasons.

“Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is on loan for one season from the English club, Liverpool FC. The 20-year old Awoniyi (August 12, 1997) played last season at Excelsior Mouscron on loan and did very well there. In 31 matches, he scored 10 goals and gave 7 assists.

“Also against the Buffalo’s he proved his worth: he gave the assist for Mouscron’d equalizer against Ghent in the 3-2 defeat at Le Cannonier and he also scored the equalizer at 1-1 at the Ghelamco Arena later last season with the Buffalo’s winning 3-1.

“Awoniyi also represented Nigeria several times at the national youth teams , including the Nigerian U17, U20 and U23. He scored 11 goals in 23 games.

“We wish Taiwo a goal-fit and successful season at the Buffalo’s!” Gent announced on Monday.

Their season begins on Friday night with a trip to Standard Liege .
