Transfer news: Rio Ferdinand tells Chelsea to recall striker Tammy Abraham

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has urged Chelsea to bring back Tammy Abraham from loan at Swansea in their hunt for a new striker.

Antonio Conte is desperately seeking for a back-up to lead striker, Alvaro Morata.

Chelsea have been linked with West Ham forward, Andy Carroll, Stoke City veteran, Peter Crouch and Roma’s Edin Dzeko in recent days.

But for Ferdinand, Abraham, the young Chelsea forward currently out on loan with Swansea, could do the backup job at Stamford Bridge.

He told BT Sports, “The two that have been mentioned, Andy Carroll I believe he just got injured and Peter Crouch has been a great player over the years but is coming to the end of his career.

“Chelsea have had Tammy Abraham in their ranks, who is a tall, rangy player.

“You’d put him on the side of being a target-man. So maybe he fits that bill – why isn’t he being brought back from loan to fill that part.

“That’s the frustrating thing I think for Chelsea fans that they see talent coming out of the youth system, being loaned out and then going out and buying other players.

“You see [Michy] Batshuayi up front there – is he better than [Dominic] Solanke [who left for Liverpool in the summer], Abrahams who they have?

“If these guys were given a chance to play in a Chelsea shirt could they do more than what a Batshuayi is doing who they went out and paid £30million for?”
