Transfer: Arsenal ready to sign Zaha after unveiling Pepe

Arsenal are still keen on Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, despite confirming the club-record signing of Nicolas Pepe on Thursday, Press Association reports.

Unai Emery turned his attention to the 24-year-old, who scored 22 goals last season and registered 11 assists, after Palace rejected an opening £40million bid for Zaha.

With the Gunners already boasting two of the division’s most prolific forwards in Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, many fans and pundits have questioned the wisdom of investing so heavily in at least one new winger.

However, it is understood that Emery and his team, undertook a forensic analysis of last season’s run-in.

They concluded their dreadful away form, which saw them lose at Everton, Wolves and Leicester in quick succession, would most likely be remedied by adding more pace and skill to their forward line.

Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan contributed just 10 goals and nine assists between them last season, prompting Emery to switch to a five-man defence and placing the creative emphasis on his wing-backs, primarily Saed Kolasinac.
