Transfer: Arsenal deal with Barcelona for Suarez collapses

Arsenal are set to miss out on signing Denis Suarez this month, as their negotiations with Barcelona have broken down, the UK Metro reports.

The Gunners have been exploring the possibility of signing the 25-year-old on loan during the January window, as they are unable to spend money on big transfer fees.

Arsenal offered a €2million (£1.7m) loan fee, but could not agree on the inclusion of a clause, which would require them to permanently sign the midfielder at the end of the season.

Barca looked to get around Arsenal’s refusal to agree on a compulsory right to buy clause by allowing Suarez to leave on loan, but on the condition that he signed a new contract.

Suarez’s current contract expires in June 2020 and Barca were concerned about the transfer fee they could command at the end of the season, when he would have just 12 months remaining on his deal.
