The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mallam Mohammed Bello has disclosed that his administration is putting everything in place to make the Abuja rail system operational in the last quarter of 2017 so as to reduce the traffic snarl experienced at peak periods within the territory.
The minister disclosed this while receiving the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu who paid him a working visit in his office.
Noting that the last quarter of 2017 has been set as the new target date envisaged by the FCT Administration for the Abuja rail to come on board, Bello assured that the system would revolutionize the transportation system as motorists will be attracted to board the trains.
He added that the rail transportation would also go a long way to create employment for some residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCT minister also requested the NNPC to build Mega Filling Stations in the six area councils of the FCT, instead of only one earmarked for each Senatorial districts in the 36 states of the federation, stressing that a large population of the territory resides in the area councils and satellite towns.
“Citing mega filling stations in the area councils will definitely reduce pressure on the stations in the Federal Capital City,” he stated.
In his remarks, Kachikwu stated that the corporation was planning to construct additional Mega Filling Stations in all the Senatorial Districts of the country in partnership with the states of the federation which is three per state.
While disclosing that 15 state governors had already indicated interest by providing plots of land for the programme, the Kachikwu called on the FCT Minister to key into the scheme by making plot of land available in Abuja for the purpose.
