Following the sack of Youths who were undergoing training as Kaduna state Traffic and Environmental law Enforcement Agency ( KASTELEA), under the Ministry of Works and Transport, the trainees today stormed the state Secretariat with placards protesting their sack.
DAILY POST recalls that the agency was established by the previous administration of Alhaji Muktar Ramalan Yero.Their duties were to be taking care of the environment and traffic within Kaduna state after their training.
Some of the placards carried by the protesters include, “Please we want Kaduna State government to return our jobs. We have families and parents depending on us. So please we need our jobs back.”
Speaking on behalf of the trainees, Ahmad Rufai Abdullahi, said they were issued letters of Termination of their appointments few weeks ago.
According to him, they have been thrown into confusion because they never expected development,” We never expected to be told that our services are no longer needed by the state government after given us hope for five months.
” Some of us are artisans before given this job by the former governor and we were being paid 18,000 naira minimum wage as salary.
”Now the new governor said he doesn’t want us since we were brought in by a PDP governor. This decision is not in the interest of the masses,” he said.
Abdullahi therefore appealed to Malam El-Rufai to kindly reconsider the decision and give them back their jobs to enable them take care of their families.
A copy of the termination letter which was signed by the Director Administration and finance, Hajia Hauwa Y. Othman, was made available to our correspondent.
Another trainee, Ibrahim Musa said majority of them were diploma holders and graduates while some were SSCE holders.
” We have families depending on the little stipends given to us since we started training five months ago. We are all happy that by the end of our six months training, we will be confirmed as permanent staff before they terminated our appointments,” he said
Similarly, the State Government is currently reorganizing KSTELEA, its agency for traffic and environmental law enforcement.
On assumption of office, the government found out that the agency had conducted irregular recruitment contrary to due process and the law establishing the agency.
Early in June, the then General Manager of the agency sought the approval to send the recruited staff for training at the police college. This request was declined in favour of the reorganization of the agency.
