Widows and traders on Friday in Sapele, Delta State protested against the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s decision ordering that their stalls, which were allocated by the past administration, be revoked.
The women berated the governor’s order, noting that they were allotted the stalls after making full payment and all formalities completed.
According to the leaders of the protesters, Mrs Cecelia Eregare and Mr. Happy Atsegor, “It is wickedness for the governor that was voted into power by the people to turn around and throw us into the street after paying for our stalls.”
They said the matter has been on since 2006 when the market was razed down by fire and they were ordered to vacate their shops so that it would be rebuilt.
One of the leaders, Eregare noted that they were re-allotted the stalls in early 2014 after they completed payment and formalities with the government.
Also lending his voice, Atsegor said, “We applied for the shops; we bought forms, completed and returned them as well as made the requirement payment before we were given the shop. So it is surprising that the new governor is giving us notice to quit.”
However, the placard wielding widows and traders vowed to denounce the government’s quit order.
