A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 24-year-old trader, Muhammad Rilwanu, in prison over alleged rape of a nine-year-old girl.
The accused, who resides in Gidanhaki area of Sokoto, is facing one count charge of rape.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison, stating that the court lacked jurisdiction on the matter.
Adamu adjourned the case until June 21 for mention and transfer to a court of competent jurisdiction.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Nasiru Auta told the court that the offence was committed on May 10 at the accused’s shop.
According to him, the accused lured the nine-year-old girl to his shop and had sexual intercourse with her.
Auta said that the case was reported to the Intelligence and Investigation Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, by the victim’s mother, Aisha Ibrahim.
The offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
