Trader convicted to six-month jail term for stealing ATM card


An Abuja Grade 1 Area Court has convicted a 29-year-old businessman, Emeka Ogubuike to six months imprisonment for stealing an ATM card owned by one Mary Agbo and subsequently using it to perform a transaction worth N85, 000.

The accused, who resides in Kubwa area of Abuja, was imprisoned for stealing which contravenes Section 288 of the Penal Code.

The police prosecutor, Igono Ocholi, during his testimony before the Court said the plaintiff, on January 17, lodged a complaint at the Kubwa Police Station on how the accused broke into her house in Kubwa and made away with her UBA ATM card.

Ocholi, further stated that Ogubuike used the ATM card to withdraw money worth N85, 000 from her account, adding during investigation that the card was recovered from him.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge read and was convicted to six months imprisonment with an option of of N20, 000 fine by the Judge, Mohammed Marafa.

The Judge also ordered Ogubuike to pay a compensation fee of N85, 000 to the plaintiff.
