The people of Dutse Makaranta in Bwari Area Council of the FCT on Wednesday morning felt the worst impact of fuel scarcity when a tipper rammed into some Okada men who had queued up in one Shafa filling station to buy fuel.
Our correspondent who was at the scene of the incident reported that no fewer than 60 commercial motorcyclists were severely injured while two persons; a man and a woman were killed in the incident.
Shafa filling station is located at Dutse Makaranta area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, along the Bwari/ Ushafa expressway.
Our correspondent reports that the accident occurred between 9 and 10am as a tipper coming from Ushafa axis lost control and rammed into the Okada riders who were waiting on the queue to buy fuel.
An eyewitness told DAILY POST that usually, the Okadas will barricade that part of the road, thereby making it difficult for vehicular movement. He said, most time, security agents are mobilized to the area to control traffic. She said ” This is not the first time this is happening. The other day, a similar incident happened. I think something has to be done about this.”
DAILY POST observed that over 60 motorcycles were damaged in the accident even as the driver of the said tipper fled the scene for fear of been attacked by angry youths.
The tipper which stopped at the Police Signboard junction slightly caught fire before some irate youth poured petrol and other inflammable materials to burn it down.
The filling station immediately suspended sales following a protest that ensued as angry youth took over the road, forcing motorists to use one lane of the major road.
A sales attendant who spoke with our correspondent, though wished not to be named said “ A tipper which lost control as a result of break failure ran into some Okada’s that queued up to buy fuel from our filling station.
“The accident which claimed the lives of two persons, a man and a woman made other Okada men to take up arms and setting the tipper on fire. We have stopped selling at the moment, but everywhere is calm now. ”
The attendant also stated that the driver fled the scene immediately the accident happened.
“I really do not know why the driver ran away from the scene, may be for fear that he might be killed or because he is evil minded.”
DAILY POST observed that the youths have already been dispersed by policemen mobilized to the scene of the incident from Dutse Police Station.
However efforts to speak with the DPO, Dutse Police Station did not yield any fruitful result as he was said not to be on seat.
