The Borno Police Command says it has dismissed three policemen accused of killing a pastor’s son at the Mobile Police Training School in Liman-Kara area of the state.
Alhaji Lawal Tanko, the state Commissioner of Police, said at a news briefing on Tuesday in Maiduguri that the policemen had beaten the deceased to death for allegedly killing a dog belonging to one of them.
The commissioner said the policemen were dismissed after they were found wanting by an Orderly Room Trial.
He added that the command had handed the policemen to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for prosecution after full investigation.
“The three policemen have been dismissed from service following a recommendation by a trial panel.
“The case had been pending before I resumed in the state. I approved the dismissal after going through the file and the recommendations of the panel,” he said.
Tanko said that the aim was to prevent other policemen from taking laws into their hands.
“A policeman should not be seen as taking laws into his hands.
“We believe that the dismissal will serve as deterrent to others who might want to do a similar thing,” he said.
The police commissioner acknowledged that the father of the deceased had written to say he had forgiven the policemen, but said the police authority had a duty of ensuring justice was done.
“The case is a murder case between the Federal Government and the suspects and not between the complainant and the suspects,” he said.
