Three domestic servants bolt with employer’s N8.1m valuables, cash in Lagos


Three domestic servants, who allegedly stole their employer’s money and other items worth N8.1 million, were on Tuesday docked at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused — Grace Akpan, 36; Houeze Vincent,33; and Sambo Akpan, 42 — are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

Prosecutor Ingobo Emby told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 17 at a house on Raymond Njoku Street, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Insp. Emby said the accused stole 2, 000 dollars, two gold rings valued at N684, 000 and a gold watch valued at N7 million, all valued at N8.1 million, property of their employer (names withheld).

He said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 409 stipulates a two-year jail term for conspiracy.

Counsel to the accused, Mr J. J. Ozemhoya, urged the court to grant the accused bail on liberal terms.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr H. O. Amos, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

He said t one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and must produce evidence of tax payment to the state government.

The case was adjourned to Aug. 24 for mention.
